Opinion: Did The Originals Gain The Right Demographic Viewership?
The Originals has ended it’s first season through all the ship wars, and frustration. Do you think The Originals can survive with the fan base it has now? I’ve been asking myself this question for awhile. I do run a fansite dedicated to The Originals. Looking at my TL and going to my tumblr blog are an event within itself. I alway love to know what fans are thinking or tweeting. The reason this questions brings up many concerns for me? You have to remember All the reasons the writers and cast give us. Reasons as to why TVD crossovers are hard. Why Caroline has not moved to The Originals. Why this miracle birth happened in the first place.
Looking at the answers and responses of some of the die-hard TO stans. I have to question the reality of The Originals right now. You have a show that was promoted as being darker and more mature than TVD, having no love triangles or squares. That is all the cast and writers preached to us from the backdoor pilot to the finale. It really makes me think if they actually go to the polls or look at The Originals hashtag. What I see are questions about Klaus and Hayley having another hybrid baby, how Klaus and Hayley are meant to be because they are soul mates, this to me sounds more like a romance novel than a dark and mature show.
Let’s look at some of the ideas the writers have put out there and how the fanbase either read too much into what is shown. Or they see it and still want to come to their own conclusion. Not knocking them for it, no one ever really knows how people will interpret things. Hayley has expressed strong feelings for Elijah, is now a super powerful hybrid, defeats 1000yr old original vampire, and the best one is….a werewolf princess. Now if you just read those past couple of sentences, would you say this show is mature or dark. Rebekah always wanted a family but opts to take her brother’s child, living a happy life with Hope until she can return to her parents. Dark and mature for you yet? Elijah who loved Katherine for over 500yrs, falls instantly for the dark beauty Hayley ????!!! Marcel in the end saves Hope and reconnects with his “father” Klaus. Leaving Klaus to pine over Camille a human who he compels because they can’t be friends. He destroys beautiful things and she is beautiful. Sidenote—>> TVD Crossover. On a recent trip to Mystic Falls, he has hot hybrid sex with his last love Caroline Forbes which Tyler brought up and Marcel both commented on. But ever since Klaus has arrived in New Orleans he has slept with witches and maybe could see a future with Hayley if not then at least one hell of a love triangle or square, we can’t forget Camille.
I love The Originals at it’s core. The episodes that focus on their history and family are awesome. That was when The Originals could become dark and mature. For me what the writers put out there was not concrete enough to make this show what it was promoted as. With the only thing fans commenting on or wondering about are the above notes and more hybrid babies. Which is ironic because the baby is the whole reason of the first season. And now Hope is no longer on the show but I imagined will be mentioned a lot during S2. Let’s face it a dark and mature show would have killed off Hope or Hayley. Rebekah and her would not be friends because the Rebekah I know can’t be happy that someone else is getting her wish. Worst of all it’s Klaus who gets to have children and not her. Don’t get me wrong she would eventually love the child. Still in some dark, twisted way the siblings are very codependent on each other. This is the show many wanted. Klaus’ redemption but through his current family, not his new hybrid family of Hayley and Hope.
With this show moving to Monday nights and fans asking for more Klayley babies, I hope the writers change it up and quickly. Finding that more adult demographic is not going to come from a lost soul finding redemption through his child and later falling in love with the child’s mother. That’s too cliche and will not keep fans around for many seasons. Why do you think Game of Thrones has the large range demographic that it does? It’s a real story behind a fantasy world. Which is one of the reason’s why fans love the show and it’s characters. They don’t talk about what new magical skill Jon Snow has. How there are dragons and white walkers? They talk about Jon losing his love. How a family was torn apart and still to this day is searching for one another. How you can live with yourself after sentencing your own son to die. Characters that thrive on vengeance, honor and pride. Yes… love and ships are talked about but not as much as the characters themselves and their inner conflicts. The writers give fantasy but at it’s core we still have damaged, beautiful stories. If The Originals can give us that, then I think the scope of their fans will change. They have the material, the Originals can be as dark and twisted as it can get while giving us love stories and all that’s in between.
As I always say…I have faith in the writers. Here lately I will admit I am scared for this new season of The Originals it could either be the best season thus far or crash and burn. Here’s to hope…..no pun intended.
